Kentucky State Police Conducts Murder Investigation in Owsley County

BOONEVILLE, Ky. (December 20, 2025) – On December 20, 2025, just before 2:00 p.m., the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, received a call from the Owsley County Sheriff’s Department requesting investigative assistance regarding a deceased female discovered inside a residence on Left Fork Holly Road in Booneville.

Kentucky State Police Troopers, Detectives, and Owsley County Coroner responded to the residence.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Cloyd Burkhart, 55, of Booneville, fatally shot Crystal Sexton, 51, also of Booneville, following an argument inside of the residence. Burkhart was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

Burkhart has been charged with Murder, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and was lodged in the Three Forks Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by KSP Detective Casey Caudill. He was assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police personnel, Owsley County Sheriff’s Office, and the Owsley County Coroner’s Office.
