Background Checks
Kentucky State Police (KSP) offers the general public and qualified organizations criminal background checks. Each has its own scope, rules, and process, so please review the following information carefully.
Kentucky – Name Based
- $20 check or money order made out to KY State Treasurer
- Fingerprints not required
- KSP allows the general public to obtain an adult criminal history on individuals with their permission. This process can be completed by mail or walk-in at our physical location. For mail submission, it takes an average of 10 business days to complete.

Kentucky and FBI – Fingerprints
- Effective 4/5/2023, the fee charged by IdentoGo for fingerprinting will increase from $18.00 to $20.00
- Fingerprints required
- Organizations or agencies that have a statutory requirement to conduct fingerprint based State and FBI criminal background checks are authorized to be fingerprinted at an IdentoGo location.
- Fingerprinting services are available at IdentoGo locations across KY. Go to https://uenroll.identogo.com to find a location near you.
- For questions regarding fingerprinting, please contact the requesting Agency or Board.
- Please be advised that any fingerprinting fee charged by a law enforcement agency, up to $10, is in addition to the IdentoGo and background check fee required by your requesting Agency.
FBI Only (Nationwide)
- Fingerprints required
- The FBI allows members of the general public to obtain their own criminal history for record review. Visit the FBIs website for information: https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks
- Fingerprinting services are available at IdentoGo locations across KY. Go to https://uenroll.identogo.com and select FBI History Check or Fingerprint Cards, depending on your Agency’s requirements. Please direct questions to the requesting Agency regarding their fingerprint result requirements.
