As a Kentucky State Trooper, you will perform a broad range of law enforcement duties across both urban and rural Kentucky. Troopers patrol highways to enhance traffic safety, while also conducting complex investigations, responding to emergencies, and maintaining public order. This career demands integrity, professionalism, and a dedication to upholding the laws and values of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Mandatory attendance and graduation from the Kentucky State Police Academy is required prior to your appointment as a Trooper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Kentucky State Police Academy<\/b> is an intense, <b>24-week paramilitary environment<\/b> designed to teach our Cadets the job skills necessary to perform the duties of a Trooper. Those selected to attend our Academy will receive <b>more than 1,000 hours of training<\/b> covering all aspects of law enforcement, including Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Criminal Investigations, Emergency Driving, Strategies and Tactics of Patrol Stops (STOPS), Counter-Ambush, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Cadets are paid and receive benefits<\/b> during the Academy. All equipment and agency clothing are issued. Meals and living arrangements while assigned to the Academy are provided by KSP. <b>Minimal expense to the Cadet is required<\/b> prior to beginning your career.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Many job opportunities await you after graduation. You must submit a copy of a valid driver\u2019s license at time of application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the time of application, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and three years of full-time work experience, or sixty (60) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university, or be a high school graduate with at least two (2) years of active military duty or two (2) years of experience as a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- End Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<!-- Begin Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<button class=\"button tabs-toggle\">Disqualifications<\/button>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group tabs-section-content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Applicants shall be disqualified from further participation in the selection process or removed from the register if it is determined that:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An applicant does not meet any one (1) of the qualifications for appointment as an officer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has made a false statement of material fact on the application or in response to any questions or requests for information during the selection process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has used or attempted to use political influence, coercion or bribery to secure an advantage in any phase of the selection process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has cheated during the course of any examination required during the selection process, or has attempted to gain an advantage over other applicants by any dishonest or intentionally misleading act or omission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has failed to comply with any instructions from the agency relating to the selection process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has been dismissed for cause from any public agency, or has resigned while charges of misconduct were pending.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has been convicted of a felony or a crime of moral turpitude.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant is a current user of a controlled substance, unless prescribed by a physician.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant is addicted to any controlled substance or intoxicant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has more than six (6) driver demerit points against his operator&#8217;s license.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant tests positive for an unlawful controlled substance as determined by a blood or urine analysis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant has tattoos that can be seen when the applicant wears a Kentucky State Police summer uniform shirt, which the Kentucky State Police will make available for the applicant to try on when the applicant takes the written examination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- End Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<!-- Begin Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<button class=\"button tabs-toggle\">Tattoo Policy<\/button>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group tabs-section-content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><span class=\"sectionhdrlarge\"><strong>EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2002<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agency policy requires that tattoos or body piercings shall not be visible while in any agency issued uniform. Coverups are not permitted to be worn in an effort to conceal the tattoo. Long sleeve uniform shirts are not permitted outside of the designated time it is to be worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons secondary is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.kentuckystatepolice.ky.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2024-KSP-Tattoo-Regulations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click to view KSP Tattoo Regulations<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- End Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<!-- End Tabs Block -->\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- End Main Content Block -->\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group mainContent has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<!-- Begin Main Content Block -->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trooper Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group tabs-block has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<!-- Begin Tabs Block -->\n\n\n\n<!-- Begin Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<button class=\"button tabs-toggle\">Salary<\/button>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group tabs-section-content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Cadet troopers will receive $50,942.64 (or $4,245.22 monthly) during academy training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon graduation, this salary will increase to approximately&nbsp;$69,500 annually (or $5,791.66 monthly).&nbsp;$69,500 is the total including base pay ($63,269.28) + training stipend ($4,429.00) and per diem ($1,700*). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troopers receive a salary increase with each promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troopers also receive seven dollars per day for uniform maintenance (*perdiem fluctuates depending on units schedule).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troopers also receive a $4,429.00 annual training stipend (effective August 1, 2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally throughout a Trooper&#8217;s career: promotional opportunities are available. All promotions shall receive the following salary increases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ten percent (10%) above the base salary for the trooper&#8217;s or commercial vehicle enforcement officer&#8217;s applicable number of years of service for the rank of sergeant;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twenty percent (20%) above the base salary for the trooper&#8217;s or commercial vehicle enforcement officer&#8217;s applicable number of years of service for the rank of lieutenant;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thirty percent (30%) above the base salary for the trooper&#8217;s or commercial vehicle enforcement officer&#8217;s applicable number of years of service for the rank of captain<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- End Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<!-- Begin Tabs Section -->\n\n\n\n<button class=\"button tabs-toggle\">Benefits<\/button>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group tabs-section-content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Health Insurance:<\/span>&nbsp;Troopers may choose one of a variety of health insurance plans offered with dependent coverage at additional charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Life Insurance:<\/span>&nbsp;The Commonwealth of Kentucky provides a $20,000 term life insurance policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Vacation:<\/span>&nbsp;Paid vacation time is accrued according to years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>0-4 years of employment: 12 days per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5-9 years of employment: 15 days per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10-14 years of employment: 18 days per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 years or more of employment: 21 days per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Sick Leave:<\/span>&nbsp;You accrue one sick day for every month worked. You can accumulate up to one (1) year of sick time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Military Leave:<\/span>&nbsp;Any trooper who is a member of the military reserve or National Guard is entitled to a maximum of 21 working days per year of paid military leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"boldtext\">Holidays:<\/span>&nbsp;Troopers receive 11-1\/2 paid holidays per year. Applicants are encouraged to visit the website and begin the fitness training regimen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing will be conducted in Frankfort with limited regional testing available in Eastern and Western Kentucky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical Fitness Scores are combined with the Interview score to determine overall standing in the applicant pool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A minimum cut-off score is established by the Recruitment Commander and Command Staff for each cadet class. A three-person board conducts the interview and scores the applicant based on her\/his responses. Selected scores, based on departmental needs, will continue to a polygraph examination.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Aptitude Testing<\/summary>\n<p>KSP is now using an on-line, proctored aptitude test which replaces the former written exam used for previous cadet classes.&nbsp; The aptitude test being given is part of the Kentucky Career Readiness Certificate program.&nbsp; The test measures core employability skills in reading, mathematics and data. To be eligible to move on in the KSP selection process and advance, you must pass the proctored KCRC assessment and achieve a Level 3 on all three parts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Polygraph Examination<\/summary>\n<p>This examination is the beginning of the background investigation.
